"There are men, in all ages, who mean to exercise power usefully; but who mean to exercise it. They mean to govern well; but they mean to govern. They promise to be kind masters; but they mean to be masters." Daniel Webster

Paradoxes of the Presidency

Over at Positive Liberty, James Hanley has an interesting piece on the contradictory things that Americans seem to want from their president. Taking from the work of presidential scholar Thomas Cronin, Hanley offers a reasonable explanation for why presidents so often disappoint even their supporters.

In particular, it helps explain why so many people see Barack Obama, who is from more-than-humble origins, as an elitist, but think John McCain, who was born into privilege and wealth and married into even greater wealth is a common man.
